Liberalism on Display: War as Moral Preening

The planned military operation against Syria already features a substantial amount of leaks regarding target selection.  So much so, that the only logical explanation is that this military operation is not meant to seriously degrade Syria's chemical warfare capabilities or even punish the Damascus regime, but merely to satisfy Obama's egoAs the most ruthless rebel groups in Syria are composed of the most radical Islamic extremists, defeating Assad's regime will simply mean putting those jihadists in power.  Does anyone seriously believe that the Syrian people will be better governed by these Islamic zealots?  There is also new evidence suggesting that some of the people responsible for training Syrian rebels were responsible for the attack on the Benghazi consulate.  Therefore, Obama will be acting to assist people responsible for killing an US ambassador.  Not to mention the fact that Obama himself stated in 2007:
The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat....
There is still a chance of preventing this war.  The British Labour Party and a group of up to 70 Tory rebels forced British PM Cameron to postpone their rush to war until next week.  If this group holds firm, they may be able to strip Obama of an important fig leaf that his military action has international support.  Syria can also muddy the issue by offering to give up some of its chemical weapons and hand over some low-ranking officers as scapegoats.
