Switzerland Takes Stand Against Islam
57% of Swiss voters and 22 of 26 cantons voted to ban the building of Islamic minarets. Such a referendum result almost certainly will not survive a 1st Amendment challenge in the US unless it is a federal constitutional amendment. (in that case, there won't be a popular vote) This also seems like an odd way to express concern about Islamic encroachment. If they are concerned about the growth of fundamentalist Muslims in their country, they should restrict immigration and work on deporting existing ones. This measure, like banning Islamic headscarves, looks like a symbolic measure to me. Symbolism without substance serves little purpose other than to antagonize people.
